A local neighbor was working on his little patch of land, just a few meters from our cabin. He spotted me twice and, suddenly, shouted in his local dialect:
“Ae ladki, bhutte khaogi?” “Hey girl, would you like some corn?”
I was startled for a second. 😂
I gestured for him to wait, and he shouted back:
“Ladke ko bhej do!” “Send the boy!”
So, obviously, I called Animesh. 😂
We walked over and, assuming he was offering to sell us some corn, asked him how much he would charge.
His response completely caught us off guard.
“Agar paise leke dunga toh mere khet hone ka kya fayada?” “If I take money from you, then what's the point of having a farm?”
We all burst out laughing.😄
What started as a simple offer of corn turned into a lovely little interaction. He took Animesh along to his home, showed him around the area, and the two of them started chatting about where we were from, where he lived and just… life in general.
Before we left, he handed us some corn from his farm.
No asking for money. No formality. Just kindness.
And the sweetest part?
The next day, he saw us again and asked:
“Bhutta khaya? Accha laga?” “Did you eat the corn? Did you like it?” 🌽
That tiny question stayed with us.
We had gone to Koti looking for nature, quiet and a break from city life. But somewhere between the misty mornings and village trails, it was this little human interaction that became one of our favorite memories.
Sometimes, a stranger simply sees you, offers you something from what they have, and makes your day.:)
