10 Best Things to Do in South Goa, India: Monsoon Affair

It had been 5-6 years since we last enjoyed a laid-back holiday in India’s favourite beach destination—Goa! But this monsoon, we didn’t overthink it—we just booked a one-way ticket to Goa, and it turned out to be the best decision of our lives!

We embraced a one-week slow travel in South Goa, taking our time to soak in the beauty around us and oh man, how magical it was. The greenery was so lush, and there were hardly any tourists! So, instead of rushing from one place to another, we enjoyed leisurely strolls along the beaches, savoured local meals and engaged with the friendly locals.

South Goa during the monsoon is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Ideally monsoon season lasts from July till mid September. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a taste of local life, South Goa has something for everyone. In this blog, we’ve shared our favorite activities and best things to do in South Goa.

From Dabolim Airport to South Goa: Hassle-Free Transfer

If you’re planning to visit South Goa, it’s best to fly into Dabolim Airport.  The distance from Dabolim Airport to South Goa(Colva) is approximately 25 Kms. We landed there in the evening and were pleasantly surprised to see how easy it has become to get a taxi without the worry of being scammed! Before your trip, be sure to download the Goa Miles app. It works like Uber and offers a hassle-free travel service, including airport transfers and local commutes.

There’s even a counter at the airport to guide you through the process. The app displays the charges based on your location, so you know what to expect. We booked a cab through the app from the airport to Colva, and it only cost us INR 900, which is much cheaper compared to local cab services that charge around 2,000 INR. The cab was neat and we had a great time talking to our driver.

There are plenty of great hotels in South Goa, but if you’re searching for a true home away from home, check out our article on: Why This South Goa Airbnb is the Perfect Home Away from Home.

1. Take a Monsoon Road Trip in Goa: Discover Scenic Routes

One of the best things to do in South Goa during the monsoon is to take a road trip and explore the untouched parts of the region. After exploring Goa on two-wheels, we were really excited for a long road trip this time. Trust me, your mind will be blown!

Driving through Goa gave us a chance to explore its quaint villages and a many beautiful temples along roadside. As the places in South Goa are quite spread out, opting for a self-drive made our journey much easier. Plus, the freedom to stop wherever we wanted for a quick photo (especially Urvi😀 ) or to enjoy the stunning scenery made the trip even more enjoyable!

You can easily rent a self-drive car in Goa, provided you have a valid Indian driver’s licence. We rented an automatic Creta for our adventure from O’Goa Rentals (ph: 8668221405). Shared their number as the prices are genuine, and they even offer convenient pickup and drop-off services.

Car rentals in Goa can cost anywhere between INR 1,200 to INR 4,000 per day, depending on the type of vehicle you choose. Whether you’re opting for a budget-friendly hatchback or a premium SUV, there are plenty of options to suit your travel needs.  The petrol prices in Goa ranges between INR 95- INR 97 per litre (As of September 2024).

Pro-tip: Avoid planning your trip during public holidays, as the prices of rentals can double.

2. Salaulim Dam, Goa: A Monsoon Marvel

Our quest to find something different in Goa brought us to a hidden gem – Salaulim Dam. Located at 45kms from Palolem Beach, Salaulim Dam is perfect for a day trip. It is basically Goa’s largest man-made reservoir, where when the water level in the Dam rises or overflows (especially during monsoons), the excess water flows through a semi-circular outlet that looks like a giant sinkhole.  It’s a breathtaking sight during the monsoons, with gushing water spray, lush green gardens all around.  This unique design makes Salaulim Dam one of a kind in India.

The site is open from 9 AM to 6 PM, and the entry ticket costs INR 60 per person. Parking is available on-site.

Additionally, it an excellent spot for birdwatching, where you can spot various bird species. Nearby, there’s a beautiful botanical garden that you must visit, inspired by the famous Brindavan Gardens in Mysore. If you have extra time, consider visiting the Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary to round off your day! Believe it or not, beaches and parties are not the only attractions anymore.

Pro-Tip: Make sure to bring a raincoat to stay dry and a photo ID for entry.

Undoubtedly, one of the best things to do in South Goa.

3. Martins Corner, South Goa: A Culinary Gem

This family-run eatery is a favourite among locals and tourists alike, and a must-visit spot when exploring South Goa. We were staying in Colva and just had to visit Martin’s Corner again. We first visited in 2017, and seeing it now was a drastic change. The place has grown so much, with live music and an extensive menu. It’s an ideal place to enjoy a meal after a day of exploring.

Martin’s Corner is famous for its authentic Goan dishes, including fresh seafood and chicken. They cater to both meat lovers and vegetarians. While Animesh enjoyed the Chicken Xacuti, I had a great time savouring the Pasta Primavera (Veg).

For dessert, don’t forget to try Bebinca with ice cream, a traditional Goan dessert that comes in seven layers. We also had Apple pie, which was just average. Additionally, Serradura is a popular choice for those with a sweet tooth! The cost for two people will be around 1200 INR ($14).

Their Restaurant Timings are: 11.30 am to 4.00 pm & 6.30 pm to 11.30 pm

If you’re in South Goa, a visit to Martin’s Corner is a must. The restaurant also has ample parking, making it convenient for visitors driving through the area. They’ve even expanded to include hotels and guesthouses, making it a fantastic spot for both dining and accommodation.

Pro-Tip:  If you’re visiting after 9 PM, be sure to reserve a table for yourself, as this is the busiest time.

Bebinca, so yum!

4. Explore Hidden Beaches in South Goa, India

Another best things to do in South Goa is to visit its hidden beaches. Galgibaga Beach is one of a hidden gem. The scenic route to Galgibaga Beach reminded me of Sri Lanka, with coconut trees lining the roads and rivers winding through the mountains. The lush greenery all around looked just like a painting.

As you make your way to Galgibaga Beach, you’ll cross beautiful paddy fields. There’s even a point where you can catch a glimpse of a train passing by, adding a charming touch to the scenery.

Reaching this South Goa beach was magical. The crystal-clear waters and lack of tourists made it feel like our own private paradise—we were the only ones there, hehe! Be sure to explore all the way to the end of the beach, where you can discover stunning rock formations and picturesque backwaters. It’s a perfect spot to unwind and appreciate the beauty of nature.

Other hidden gems in South Goa include Butterfly Beach and Cola Beach, both of which offer serene beauty and a peaceful atmosphere. However, we also visited Agonda Beach and, to be honest, it didn’t quite live up to the pristine experience we were hoping for compared to the other beaches.

Disclaimer: There are no shacks on Galgibaga Beach. Additionally, during the monsoon, you’ll find that there are hardly any shacks open on the beaches in South Goa. This means you’ll need to plan for food and drinks if you’re spending the day there.

5. Eat Like a Local in Goa-  Starlight Restaurant:

Our visit to Starlight Restaurant, located in Assolna, South Goa was no less than an adventure. This place was recommended by our host, and we were thrilled to check it out. It truly is a hidden gem! The restaurant is situated right next to the Sal River, and if you get the right seats, you’ll feel like you’re dining on a boat.

It’s a basic restaurant, but the food is delicious and reasonably priced. While Starlight also serves Goan, Indian, and Chinese cuisine, it is primarily renowned for its Seafood. Try their Prawn curry rice and Crab masala. They are scrumptious. They also have alcohol available on their menu. Many locals love dining here, so you know the food must be good. So, if you’re looking for an authentic Goan experience, this is the place to go.

The decor of the restaurant has a super vintage feel, giving it a unique charm. To top it all off, there’s live music that adds to the lovely atmosphere, making your dining experience even more enjoyable. If you’re sensitive to seafood smells, this might not be the place for you.

However, it gets busy very quickly, so arriving early is the best idea! The meal for one will cost approximately 400 INR ($5).

6. Goa’s Sunset Beach- Cabo de Rama

Cabo De Rama has recently gained a lot of popularity and attention from tourists, and the hype is worth it. If you’re visiting, be prepared for a crowd, as many people come to enjoy the breathtaking sunset views from the vantage point.

The experience is nothing short of amazing, as the sun dips below the horizon, casting vibrant colours across the sky. In addition to the stunning scenery, there are plenty of Insta-worthy restaurants nearby where you can grab a quick meal.

Pro-tip: We would suggest ditching the usual parking area and heading to the left side instead. This lesser-known spot offers fewer people and gives off those classic “Dil Chahta Hai” vibes! You can sit and spend a laidback evening soaking the views!

P.S.: Please do not litter and be mindful of your surroundings, especially if you’re traveling with kids. It’s important to keep this beautiful location clean for everyone to enjoy.

7. Cabo De Rama Fort

Another Best things to do in South Goa for free is to visit this ancient Fort. Within 5 minutes of distance from the beach, there lies Cabo De Rama Fort, one of the oldest and most historic forts in Goa. This fort has seen many rulers, from Hindu kings to Portuguese colonizers, and its rich history is reflected in its ancient walls and architecture.

As you explore the fort, you’ll find remnants of its old structures, including cannons, a chapel, and watchtowers. It’s a peaceful place to walk around, take photos, and imagine the past.

Perched high on a cliff, the fort provides an uninterrupted view of the Arabian Sea. Whether you’re visiting during the day or at sunset, the panoramic views are sure to leave you in awe. When we arrived, it started drizzling, which made the spectacular view even more special.

Make sure to explore a hidden gem in the fort—a small pebble beach that you can reach by climbing down a few stairs. This secluded spot is perfect for a quiet moment by the water, away from the crowds. But during monsoon be mindful of the path as it might get slippery.

Practical tips- Cabo De Rama Fort is easily accessible by road, and there’s parking available, so you don’t have to worry about where to leave your vehicle. Entry to the fort is free, making it a great place to visit without any extra costs. Don’t forget to take your cameras as it’s a photographer’s paradise!

8. A Secret Spot in Chicolna, Goa

Located 23 kilometers away in Chicolna, Goa, we discovered a secluded spot. Our original plan was to visit the charming heart-shaped lake, but unfortunately, the route to the cliff has been closed due to private property restrictions. Instead, we ended up at an isolated seashore that offers uninterrupted views of the Arabian Sea!

Avoid relying on Google Maps, as the original location is no longer accessible. Instead, head straight from the Indian Coast Guard Goa Campus until you reach the end of the road. The last stretch of the road becomes uneven, so it’s best suited for SUVs. You can park your car and enjoy a short five-minute walk to the viewpoint.

While we were there in the early morning, we had the entire place by ourselves. The area is perfect for a peaceful picnic, surrounded by the sounds of the wind and the beauty of nature. Keep an eye out for peacocks and langurs jumping through the trees. If you visit during sunset, please be mindful of the environment.

And remember, Please do not litter!

9. Experience an Authentic Goan Thali

No trip to Goa is complete without savouring an authentic Goan thali. This culinary experience is not just about enjoying a meal; it’s about immersing yourself in the rich cultural heritage and flavors of the region.

If you’re looking to enjoy the best authentic Goan thali, then Antique Mardol Restaurant must be on your South Goa itinerary. Conveniently located on the Panaji-Margao Highway Bypass Road in Verna, Goa, this restaurant serves delicious food that’s loved by locals and highly recommended by our host.

We went with the intention of ordering a fish thali for Animesh, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the restaurant is vegan and vegetarian friendly. We ended up ordering both a fish thali and a vegetarian thali, and we were amazed by the quantity and quality of the food.

Our thalis were a delicious and vibrant platter, where a Goan Fish thali included fish curry, fried fish, prawn curry, crab & shellfish masala, vegetable bhaji, seasonal fruit, salad, pickle and rice. While my Vegetarian thali had dal, local vegetables (beans, bitter gourd, potatoes), Phodi- pan pried Okra with Masalas, kokum Curry, salad, pickles rice, chapati and papad! Trust me, it was a wholesome meal and truly one of the best things to do in South Goa’s trip. Thalis for two cost around INR 568 (~7$) only.

The restaurant features decent air-conditioned seating and was packed during lunchtime on a weekday, filled with locals. We were the only tourists there hehe!

Also, there is ample parking space available at the restaurant, so, whether you’re visiting during peak hours or on a busy weekend, you won’t have to worry about finding a spot for your vehicle.

10. Divar Island

We took a day trip to Divar Island, just an hour away from our stay in Colva, and it turned out to be one of the best things to do in South Goa—or anywhere in Goa, for that matter. Divar Island feels completely disconnected from the rest of Goa and can only be accessed via ferry. It’s the perfect spot to witness the authentic local Goan life and explore the UNESCO heritage site of Old Goa.

There’s no entry fee, and you can take your vehicle along on the ferry. We boarded from the Old Goa Ferry terminal, with ferries running every 15 minutes. Two-wheelers travel for free, while there’s a small fee of INR 7 for four-wheelers. The ferry ride across the Mandovi River only takes about 5 minutes, and soon you’ll find yourself on the tranquil Divar Island.

Taking our car on the ferry was an adventure in itself! Upon reaching Divar Island, we were absolutely thrilled by the beauty of the place. We drove around aimlessly, discovering beautiful homes inspired by Portuguese architecture. As we explored further, we stumbled upon ancient temples, each offering a glimpse into the island’s rich spiritual history. One of the highlights was discovering Goa’s finest 18th-century baroque church.

The beauty of the island is unparalleled with lush paddy fields, and riding an e-bike during the monsoon is highly recommended to fully immerse in the serene atmosphere. You can easily rent one from Blive E-bike Tours, a top recommendation in Goa. Though we wanted to join in, it turned out to be a bright, sunny day. We also came across peacocks singing which were truly a treat to our ears.

While a day trip to Divar Island is sufficient to explore its beauty, there are a few good hotels if you wish to stay overnight. You’ll also find small eateries for refreshments along the way.

If you want to experience slow travel in Goa, this should be on your list of best things to do in South Goa and should not be missed!😉

11. Fontainhas Quarters, Panjim

While we were exploring Divar Island, we also made a visit to the Fontainhas Quarters in Panjim (15 minutes from Old Goa). The street is lined with colourful and vibrant Portuguese-style houses, and we enjoyed exploring the area on foot. Painted in pastels and fluorescents, Fontainhas has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. For the best experience, we recommend an early morning walk.

Just keep in mind that it is a residential area, so be respectful—don’t litter or create chaos as you enjoy this picturesque neighborhood.

Our aimless wandering led us to a delightful find: Confiteria 31 De Janeiro, a quaint little bakery adorned with flowers. The interiors were gorgeous, and the owner was incredibly friendly. We had a quick bite, and everything we tried was delicious!

Pro-tip: The bakery remains closed on Sundays, so plan accordingly!

A little hidden gem in Goa!

There are also plenty of waterfalls to visit, like Dudhsagar Falls and Bamanbudo Waterfall but you’ll need to check the timings as they may vary during monsoons.

And with that, we wrap up our impromptu and slow-paced trip to South Goa. We had an amazing time exploring this side of Goa like never before. It’s safe to say Goa is not overrated, and not all beaches are packed with tourists.

Whenever you plan your trip, be sure to include these best things to do in South Goa in your itinerary. If you have any recommendations, feel free to share them with us!

Don’t forget to share this post with your friends too😉.
